Documentation for US Car Export

Shipping your car from the United States involves clearing US customs, which requires submitting several documents to prove vehicle ownership. Here are the required documents:

  • Bill of Sale for the vehicle
  • Original Vehicle Title (If there is a lien on the car, a lien release letter is also required)
  • Power of Attorney form
  • Completed Online Shipping Form
  • Copy of Passport (if you are an international citizen without a US passport)
  • Copy of EIN Letter (if you are a US citizen)

Please note that certain states do not issue titles for classic cars. For example, Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont do not issue titles for older vehicles. Ensure you check the requirements specific to your state before proceeding.

    • Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF): 0.3464% of cargo value (minimum $31.67, maximum $614.35)

International Car Import Process

Once your vehicle is ready for import, the process follows these key stages:

Preparation & Documentation (2 weeks):

  • Original bill of lading preparation
  • Vehicle export customs clearance
  • Container loading and securing
  • Shipping documentation processing

Shipping Timeline:

  • Additional week for shared container service
  • 2-3 weeks sailing time to New Jersey
  • 5-10 weeks sailing time to California

Import Procedures at US Port:

  • Terminal handling at arrival port
  • Customs clearance procedure
  • Container trucking to unloading facility
  • Vehicle unloading and inspection
  • Storage at secure warehouse

When importing a car to the US, it’s recommended to provide the original overseas title along with a bill of sale. If an original title is included, it will be stamped upon import approval by US customs. Without a physical title, only an electronic record of the import entry will be available, which may pose challenges for registration with your local DMV.

DMV requirements for registering an imported car vary by state, but typically, the DMV will require the original foreign title, the original import documentation stamped by US customs, and the bill of sale. Ensuring you have all these documents ready can streamline the registration process.
